The question

Pitch sequencing involves more than looking at one pitch at a time. For this research, I examined how changes in plate position between pitches relate to the probability of a swing and miss.

Data and approach

I developed Plate Distance Differential, or PDD, to quantify plate-position change between pitches. The research used 2025 MLB Statcast data and a generalized linear mixed model to examine the relationship with whiff probability.

Dr. Deokkyung Ock advised the project at Quinnipiac University.

My contribution

I developed the PDD metric and applied the statistical model. I also presented the research at the Tri-State Sport Management 2026 Annual Summit Poster Presentation in Hackensack, New Jersey.

Interpreting the work

The project connects a baseball question with a measurable variable and a statistical method. Its value depends on explaining how the metric is defined, what the model estimates, and the limits of the interpretation.

This overview describes the research question and approach. Detailed estimates and figures belong with the full research materials so readers can evaluate them in context.
